MTR Corporation and the Centre for Civil Society and Governance at HKU was\u00a0established\u00a0with the aim of unlocking the sustainability potential of the Lok Ma Chau (LMC) Wetland. Adopting a wetland transformation strategy based on Nature-based Solution, we hope to go beyond environmental management, and create blended values that\u00a0benefit\u00a0the society at large.\u00a0\u00a0\r\n\r\nThis initiative combines research, prototyping, monitoring, evaluation,\u00a0stakeholder\u00a0engagement\u00a0and adaptive management to ensure long-term success.\u00a0Our team\u00a0customise an\u202fIntegrated Multi-Trophic\u00a0Agro-Aquaculture model\u202ffor the LMC Wetland, which mimics nature\u2019s way of recycling nutrients,\u00a0and creates\u00a0a balanced environment for multiple species. The system helps restore aquatic ecosystem health, enhance circularity, and regenerate productivity, while meeting conservation\u00a0objectives.\u00a0Our trials\u00a0include setting up a wetland plant nursery and hatchery, floating\u00a0wetlands\u00a0and cultivating freshwater mussels.\u00a0\u00a0\r\n\r\nWe\u00a0identified\u00a0key stakeholders and engaged with them throughout the process,\u00a0soliciting\u00a0comments and gaining support. The villages will be revived as \u201cForest Villages\u201d, a common term that describes settlements with forest as the dominant and provisioning habitat, through restoration of farmlands, enhancement of habitats, and adaptive repurposing of village assets. A collaborative and participatory approach will be employed to engage stakeholders\u2014villagers, members of non- profits, scientists, architects, artists and interested citizens\u2014in an array of conservation activities through which they will acquire knowledge, skills, and commitment to take up the role of the guardians of the forest villages.\r\n\r\nThis is a first-of-its-kind project in Hong Kong that focuses on upland forest conserving both natural and cultural landscapes as an integrated and holistic living heritage.\r\n\r\nThe programme aims to:\r\n\r\n \t1. Restore a mosaic of \u201cForest Village Ecosystem\u201d land uses to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services\r\n \t2. Conserve upland forest species and protect their habitats\r\n \t3. The villages will be revived as \u201cForest Villages\u201d, a common term that describes settlements with forest as the dominant and provisioning habitat, through restoration of farmlands, enhancement of habitats, and adaptive repurposing of village assets. A collaborative and participatory approach will be employed to engage stakeholders\u2014villagers, members of non- profits, scientists, architects, artists and interested citizens\u2014in an array of conservation activities through which they will acquire knowledge, skills, and commitment to take up the role of the guardians of the forest villages.<\/p>\n<p>This is a first-of-its-kind project in Hong Kong that focuses on upland forest conserving both natural and cultural landscapes as an integrated and holistic living heritage.<\/p>\n<p>The programme aims to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Restore a mosaic of \u201cForest Village Ecosystem\u201d land uses to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Conserve upland forest species and protect their habitats<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Formulate sustainable management strategies and promote an adaptive repurposing of tangible and intangible rural assets to support the sustainable development of the villages<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.
