Over three days, we immersed in conversations with heritage practitioners, researchers, and community innovators, exploring the theme of Living Heritage and Cultural Industries in the Asia-Pacific: Community Creativity, Sustainable Transmission, and Cultural Innovation.\r\n\r\nDay 1: Navigating and Sustaining Heritage\r\n\r\nDiscussions centred on how communities are creatively adapting Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) through local craft villages, heritage tourism, and digital innovation.\r\n\r\nWhat struck us most was the honesty of the practitioners, grappling openly with real tensions: balancing economic benefit with cultural authenticity, and encouraging generational transmission amidst modern career pressures. Rather than viewing marketisation and technology as threats to cultural authenticity, the forum highlighted how creative enterprise can be powerful for transmitting heritage knowledge to younger generations, using digital tools and new market channels,.\r\n\r\nDay 2: Youth Engagement and the General Meeting\r\n\r\nThe second day speeches focused on youth, ICH and creative futures. The conversation with VNU students showcased their genuine passion for heritage work and a fresh, creative vision for its future.\r\n\r\nThe afternoon APHEN-ICH General Meeting focused on discussing the network&#039;s strategic direction for 2026\u20132028, followed by \u00a0a heartfully warm farewell dinner hosted by our VNU colleagues.\r\n\r\nDay 3: Field Trips to Traditional Craft Villages\r\n\r\nThe forum truly came alive during visits to the \u0110\u00f4ng H\u1ed3 folk painting village and B\u00e1t Tr\u00e0ng pottery village. We met a young villager working in community-initiated museums, leading guided tours with passion. He was even developing multilingual self-guided tour elements to make heritage accessible to new audiences \u2014 a brilliant example of local youth actively shaping how traditions thrive in the 21st century.\r\n\r\nWhen we visited artisans&#039; homes, we heard something you don&#039;t find in academic papers: the vulnerability of their position, their pride in their craft, and their pragmatic creativity in adapting the contemporary markets. These exchanges reaffirmed that sustainable transmission it&#039;s not about freezing heritage in amber, but enabling communities to choose, adapt and evolve their practices.\r\n\r\nLooking Forward\r\n\r\nOur centre recognise that universities must serve as bridges, connecting heritage communities with resources, research support, and platforms for amplifying their voices; supporting young scholars and practitioners in heritage work; and generating knowledge that informs policy and practice. Ms. So\u2019s opening speech was both inspiring and timely, reinforcing the importance of advancing nature-based solutions and sustainable practices as well as the government\u2019s understanding of the challenges and opportunities in building a resilient and sustainable future through the Northern Metropolis Development.\r\nWe were also honoured to have Professor Yahua Wang (Tsinghua University) and Dr. Ruth Meinzen-Dick(International Food Policy Research Institute) as our keynote speakers.\r\nProfessor Wang explained the challenges of applying the SES framework across contexts due to variability in variable selection and interpretation, while also highlighting the importance of complexity, robustness, collaborative networks, and the potential for integrating AI and SES research. He also reflected on the importance of collaborative networks in working toward a more common SES language.\r\nBuilding on this, Dr. Meinzen-Dick spoke to the importance of bridging theory and practice, transdisciplinarity, and building connections across people, institutions, and disciplines. She highlighted the importance of engaging with property rights and collective action in robust ways, and reflected on how experiential learning fosters collective action.\r\nWe were pleased to also offer a panel session featuring Professor Maiko Nishi, Professor Ching-Ping Tang, Professor Stephen M.B. Tang, and our Centre Director Professor Wai-Fung Lam. Dr. Winnie Law led a fruitful discussion on critical issues such as challenges in evaluating and understanding social-ecological systems beyond conventional metrics, including how to capture the Recently, our project team partnered with local shared-cycling brand Locobike to host an inclusive cycling workshop at St. James&#039; Settlement\u00a0WE NET Club District Support Centre (Eastern).\r\n\r\nKey Highlights:\r\n\r\nIntegration of Technology and Rehabilitation Services: The workshop showcased cycling equipment integrated with Virtual Reality (VR) technology. This allows persons with disabilities (PWD) to experience the joy of outdoor sports within a safe and controlled indoor environment, effectively breaking down physical and environmental barriers.\r\n\r\nEvidence-Based Feedback: The session served as a platform to gather insights from frontline rehabilitation professionals. By leaving the equipment at the centre for member trials, the team continues to collect user data and experience feedback, assisting the enterprise in refining its products and services to better suit diverse needs.\r\n\r\nAdvancing Social Health and Sustainability: This exchange exemplifies how businesses can leverage their core competencies to generate social value. By expanding exercise options and enhancing engagement for PWD, we hope to improve their long-term physical and mental well-being\u2014a direct contribution to Social Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).\r\n\r\nWe look forward to fostering further dialogue between the business sector and social welfare\/rehabilitation institutions. As one of the panel speakers, Dr. Winnie Law, Deputy Director at the Centre for Civil Society and Governance of The University of Hong Kong, shared valuable insights on the importance of building a comprehensive social enterprise ecosystem.\r\n\r\nDr. Law emphasised that the success of social enterprises relies not only on individual efforts but also on the collective support from government, enterprises, investors, and communities to form a sustainable and vibrant ecosystem.
