Alumni Profile

Q: What was your interest in taking this program? What did you see happening in the marketplace that drew your attention to sustainability issues?

A: I applied for this programme because I really want to help companies do better in sustainability. We have become so accustomed to this throw-away culture that it will likely take a while to instil sustainability values and change individual behaviour, at scale. How many of us prioritise the environment and people over price and convenience when choosing a product (unless you are a hardcore environmentalist). It just seems more impactful if we can shift the supply side, trying to get the corporates to rethink what it means to be a sustainable and responsible business.

Q: What would be one or two key elements of this program that have helped you to further your career, and can you give an example of how you use your new skills and knowledge?

A: To name a few:
1) The multidisciplinary nature is really what sets this programme apart. ESG is a field that’s rapidly growing. Employers are looking for people who are trained to look at sustainability issues in a more holistic way, as well as good communicators who can bridge the gap between business and science.

2) The practical knowledge. I find the case studies and practitioners’ sharing particularly useful, providing examples of best practices which I can apply at work. I still go back to my lecture notes.

3) The peers. I have met classmates from different fields/industry (banking/finance, compliance, textile/fashion, real estate, etc). These connections go beyond the classroom — I have had opportunities to work with some of them professionally or continue to share ideas/exchange knowledge via the alumni group.

Q: Would you recommend this programme to others?

A: Yes definitely. Anyone regardless of your background will benefit from the programme. At the rate climate change is accelerating, I would think having the knowledge about sustainability is essential for human survival. We can only win the race if more people can internalise this knowledge and integrate it into your company/organisation. Highly recommended for those who are interested in sustainability/environmental science but without a technical background, this programme will give you a solid foundation to further your career in sustainability.
