Traditional Glutinous Rice Planting Programme

In the past, villagers cultivated glutinous rice to make Hakka foods such as tea cakes, rice dumplings, rice balls, "rice cake"(糍粑), and New Year rice cakes. Glutinous rice was also used for brewing rice wine and played an important role in everyday village life.

In recent years, we have invited volunteers to help reclaim a small abandoned field near the village to grow traditional glutinous rice once again. At the same time, the wet paddy environment has also created valuable wetland habitats for dragonflies and frogs.

In August 2025, together with volunteers, we experienced every stage of the farming cycle — from preparing the fields and transplanting seedlings to facing typhoons and pest outbreaks, before finally harvesting in December and witnessing the resilience and abundance of nature.

Building upon this experience, we hope to continue planting early-season rice in the coming year, and we look forward to future participation from more volunteers.
