Together with SLG Programme 2025 graduate and CCSG Scholarship recipient Ms. Hilary Tse (Air Network Planning and Engineering Manager, Customer Engineering and Long Range at FedEx), SLG Programme Coโ€‘Director Dr. Vivian Chu shared powerful insights on why logistics is at the heart of sustainability โ€“ and how the industry is rapidly transforming to meet new challenges.

Drawing on her six years at FedEx, Hilary highlighted:

  • How COVIDโ€‘19 forced rapid shifts in network strategy โ€“ showing that logistics leaders need strong systems thinking and critical problemโ€‘solving skills;
  • How the boom in eโ€‘commerce has made lastโ€‘mile delivery a major capacity and emissions challenge, driving fleet expansion and electrification;
  • How AI can cut unnecessary shipments and emissions through better forecasting, while also raising questions about the energy footprint of data centres as a much broader public policy issue.

In the past year, Hilary has reflected on how the SLG Programme has supported her work, for example, improvement in stakeholder engagement and communication, especially in securing colleaguesโ€™ support by thinking from their perspective โ€“ whatโ€™s in it for them, and how workflows might be affected. This shift has made crossโ€‘department collaboration more effective and laid stronger foundations for future projects.
