Village Houses Adaptive Reuse

This project will rehabilitate multiple cultural landscape features of Mui Tsz Lam and Kop Tong. The dilapidated village houses, village structures and terrace fields will be restored, enhanced and promoted for adaptive reuse as project station and camping site.

Characteristics of  Hakka houses in Mui Tsz Lam and Kop Tong:

• Most traditional Hakka single-storey houses are mainly built by  natural materials, such as rammed earth, mud bricks, stone and granite;
• Some of the traditional Hakka Single-storey houses have also used green bricks;
• Hakka houses reconstructed in 1960-70s were mostly built by reinforced concrete.

In this Programme, selected  village houses will be restored and transformed into Mui Tsz Lam Story House as an onsite station to provide indoor working, activity and exhibition spaces for the programme team and participants. Also, six village structures will be enhanced.  We hope that the new usages of dilapidated village houses will fascinate and inspire other similar villages in Hong Kong in the future.
