Challenges and Objectives
The Tranan Forest Wisdom Seed Cultivation Project, led by Mr. Wang Jun'er and Mr. Wang Longxing, embodies a vibrant initiative in Wulai, New Taipei City, Taiwan, focused on preserving the invaluable knowledge of traditional hunting. Despite occasional hurdles, this collaboration is steadfast in enriching intangible cultural heritage. It embarks on a journey to map hunting trails, rejuvenate ancestral customs, and infuse cultural experiences into tourism, showcasing a rich narrative of cultural revival. The comprehensive goals encompass framing narratives, mapping territories, conducting rituals, and synthesizing the mountain forest wisdom system. These ambitions are aligned with the broader vision of accumulating cultural knowledge, championing cultural heritage, and actively engaging schools and businesses in forest-centric activities, aligning with global sustainability goals. While the initial phase wrapped up on December 5, 2023, the project persists through a dynamic social enterprise, aiming for sustained impact and future expansion.
Collaboration Partners and Roles
This collaboration coalesces around the Atayal Tribal Mountain Forest Wisdom Culture Heritage Association, which is pivotal in engaging village elders and youth, preserving culture, orchestrating tours, and driving local tourism. External backing from the Ministry of Culture Taiwan provided financial aid and expert guidance.
Initiated by Mr. Wang Jun'er and Mr. Wang Longxing, this union focuses on preserving hunting traditions and addressing community issues. Trust flourished with consistent commitment, resolving concerns through discussions on the value of cultural heritage. The Association led capacity-building efforts, trained talents, and shared knowledge. Though formal evaluations were pending, the project's end saw heightened trust and understanding, benefiting rural development.
Revitalisation Activities
The project focuses on revitalizing Wulai District's economy, environment, and society. Economically, it establishes a mountain forest knowledge system and promotes hunting culture through online and offline platforms for sharing technical expertise. It also addresses environmental concerns by preserving undocumented cultural heritage, emphasizing resource management, and educating future generations. Societally, it accumulates and disseminates mountain forest cultural knowledge, promotes ritual activities and hunting tours, and innovatively uses shared buses to transport tourists into the village. Challenges persist around infrastructure and human resources, with new issues emerging, like transportation safety and the adoption of shared practices.
Revitalisation Outcome
Despite ongoing evaluations and the sustained project through the association, the tangible positive impacts on the community are yet to fully materialize. However, the commitment to continue beyond the initial project phase showcases a promising outlook for ongoing improvements. The lessons learned emphasize the untapped potential within the community, especially in engaging the youth, discovering innovative solutions, and fostering a bright prospect for future rural revitalization projects.
