Peri-urban areas in the Asia-Pacific region are at the crossroads. While rural communities are facing severe problems of depopulation and environmental deterioration, they also present invaluable opportunities to address climate change, food and water security, and other sustainability challenges. In this Roundtable, academics and practitioners from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand will share their revitalisation experiences and strategies in addressing local challenges. These experiences might coalesce into an Asia-Pacific model for rural sustainability. The event will also officially launch the Rural Sustainability Programme – APAC Initiative for Regional Impact (AIRI) and introduce the regional partnership for rural sustainability. The one-year incubation programme, AIRI Urban-Rural Sustainability Fellowship 2022-23, will be announced at the launch and will call for interest from keen individuals who aspire to be the change fellows steering urban-rural integration.
