Island Hopping Briefing Education in Penghu

Background and Introduction

Taiwan grapples with a noticeable gap in education, especially on outlying islands. Recognizing the lack of resources, particularly in oral presentation skills, Liu Shu-Yu and her team have proposed the “Island Hopping Briefing Education” project to narrow the education gap between urban and rural areas in Taiwan.

Penghu, an archipelago facing unique challenges in the Taiwan Strait, became the team’s focus. With 90 islands and a historical reliance on fisheries, Penghu presented socio-economic complexities. The project aims to teach essential presentation skills, not just for academics but also for professional success, to contribute to a brighter future for Penghu. The project's vision is to ensure every child has access to quality presentation-skill training, thus reducing educational disparities and addressing regional inequalities. Through accessible and high-quality education, the team aimed to promote social class mobility and address regional inequalities.

Proposed Project Actions and Deliverables

  • The project team members basically contribute as volunteers.
  • Carefully design tailor-made courses for diverse student levels and ensure that the courses meet the specific needs of each community.
  • Collaborate with schools such as National Magong High School, Zhenhai Junior High School, and National Penghu Marine & Fishery Vocational High School.
  • Improve working conditions and seek resources to cover expenses during service in remote villages.
