Introduction

Countries around the globe are looking for long-term, sustainable solutions for increasing food production.Some have turned to sustainable agriculture in order to provide sufficient food sources without over-exploiting ecosystems. 

This e-case introduces the main goals and principles of sustainable agriculture. It features two cases in Hong Kong to demonstrate the sustainable agricultural practices as well as the management and policy initiatives taken by some local organizations as well as the public sector. Views of some key stakeholders involved will be presented to illustrate benefits and challenges of practising sustainable agriculture in Hong Kong.

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the e-case, readers should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the concept and the importance of sustainable agriculture;
  2. Understand the positive and negative environmental impacts of current agricultural practices;
  3. Acknowledge a range of forms and examples of sustainable farming practices;
  4. Describe the different views of stakeholders towards implementing sustainable agriculture in Hong Kong;
  5. Relate the significance of sustainable consumption and production to one’s daily living
