Preamble

Cities all over the world are trying to tackle food challenges such as food insecurity, nutritional imbalance, food waste and inadequate food literacy. This e-case introduces the major urban food challenges, the sustainable food system perspective and principles, as well as examples of sustainable urban food system practices and international initiatives to address the food challenges. Milan’s food system policy, which adopts the city-region approach and stresses comprehensiveness and cross-sectoral governance, will be featured. A collaborative food system initiative in Hong Kong will also be introduced.

 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the e-case, readers should be able to:

  1. Identify the major global food challenges and recognise the importance of developing sustainable urban food systems in today’s world;

  2. Explain the principles of developing sustainable urban food systems;

  3. Demonstrate a general knowledge of major international initiatives in fostering sustainable urban food systems;

  4. Comprehend how different stakeholders along the food value chain can interact to enhance the sustainability of the urban food system; and

  5. Relate and reflect their daily living with the food system sustainability of their own cities.
